5 Acupressure Points on Your Head That Help You Unwind

Our therapists work dozens of points during a session, but a handful of them are easy enough to find on your own. Try these the next time your head feels heavy. Use your fingertips, press gently but firmly, and breathe slowly for 30 to 60 seconds on each.

1. Baihui (GV20): the crown

Draw an imaginary line from the top of one ear to the other, over your head. Where it crosses the middle of your skull, that’s Baihui. It’s traditionally used to clear the mind and lift your mood.

2. Sishencong: the “four alert spirits”

Four points sitting about a thumb’s width in front of, behind and to each side of Baihui. Tap them lightly with your fingertips. They’re a favorite for calming a busy mind before sleep.

3. Taiyang: the temples

The soft hollow at each temple, just behind the outer end of your eyebrows. Small, slow circles here feel great after a long day of screens.

4. Fengchi (GB20): the base of the skull

Slide your thumbs up the back of your neck until they reach the skull, then out to the two hollows on either side. This is where a lot of neck tension (and plenty of tension headaches) likes to live.

5. Yintang: between the eyebrows

Right between your brows. Gentle pressure here is one of the simplest ways to slow your breathing down.

A quick note

Self-massage is a nice habit, not a replacement for medical care. If you get frequent or severe headaches, talk to your doctor. And if you’d like someone else to do the work for an hour, we can help with that.
